3 Things That PCOS Clients Get Told That I am SICK of Hearing!

As a Naturopath I hear all sorts of stories of what women with PCOS have been told that really get me riled up. And in this article I will share 3 of the lies that make me most upset!
Because, I don’t want you to fall for these. I want you to have the right information when it comes to taking control of your health and improving your PCOS symptoms.
My mission is to help more women solve their PCOS and improve their hormonal health and while these 3 lies about PCOS go unchallenged, then I can’t achieve my mission!
So here goes… the 3 things I hear about PCOS ALL THE TIME.
1. Hormonal birth control is the only solution for PCOS
I'm exhausted by the countless women with PCOS who have been told that the only way to manage their hormones and regulate their cycles is through hormonal birth control.
I know that many medical professionals simply don’t have the knowledge, tools and resources available to them to help their patients with their hormonal balance beyond prescribing medication.
It infuriates me when women are offered hormonal contraception as the sole solution for their PCOS. Whilst hormonal contraception can alleviate PCOS symptoms temporarily, they don’t address the underlying hormonal imbalances and metabolic issues. Hormonal contraception does not regulate your cycle because it suppresses ovulation, and the bleed experienced during its use is not a true period. Moreover, once you stop taking hormonal contraception, your symptoms often return, sometimes even worse than before.
Our approach to improving PCOS symptoms is holistic. We focus on nutrition support, lifestyle changes, targeted supplements, and education, providing long-lasting relief and sustained improvement of PCOS symptoms.
2. Normal pathology ranges mean there’s no issue.
It frustrates me to hear from my PCOS clients that their doctors have dismissed their symptoms, stating that their test results are within normal ranges and nothing is wrong. These women often struggle with clear signs of hormonal imbalance, weight management issues, and fatigue.
It angers me when clients are overlooked, and their care relies solely on the numbers in a lab report. PCOS doesn’t always manifest as extreme out-of-range test results. It can present in subtle ways within normal ranges, significantly affecting your quality of life. A comprehensive assessment, including specific PCOS markers and trends in data, is crucial for detecting these subtle imbalances and providing targeted solutions.
I understand that many medical professionals may lack the time and extensive knowledge to thoroughly evaluate pathology beyond whether they fall within reference ranges. They may not consider optimal ranges or slight changes over time.
Our approach involves a comprehensive review of your pathology results, integrating them with your signs and symptoms, and ensuring all relevant markers have been examined.
3. PCOS is all about cysts.
I’m deeply frustrated by the misconceptions surrounding PCOS and the lack of education provided to women about their reproductive systems and this condition.
Many women believe that PCOS symptoms are caused by ”cysts”, and some even receive a PCOS diagnosis solely based on the presence of Polycystic Ovaries (PCO) or Multifollicular Ovaries. This belief is incorrect, as PCO is just one of the diagnostic criteria for PCOS. In fact not all individuals with PCOS have PCO, and these conditions can also occur in adolescents, during perimenopause, and while using hormonal birth control.
Polycystic ovaries refer to an accumulation of immature follicles that do not produce hormones and are not the cause of hormonal imbalances. Rather, it's the hormonal imbalances that lead to the development of polycystic ovaries. It's essential to differentiate between Polycystic Ovaries and ovarian cysts, as the latter can be painful and produce hormones.
We prioritise client education to empower you with a better understanding of your reproductive, hormonal, and overall health, allowing you to take control of your well-being.
