As a Naturopath I love helping women to better manage their hormonal weight gain. And I hear a lot of stories from my clients about what they have been doing to try to reduce their weight themselves… and while I am happy that they’ve been so proactive, sometimes what they’ve been doing is doing more harm than good!
And so today I wanted to share with you 3 of the most common mistakes I see women with hormonal weight issues making, so that you can avoid them! And, I will also share what you can try instead.
So if you’re a woman really struggling with your hormones and improving your weight then read on because these are 3 mistakes you do not want to be making!
MISTAKE #1: Think the only way to lose weight is with Low Carb and Calorie Restriction dieting.
For most women with weight issues it’s not because they eat too many calories and too many carbs. They have a hormonal imbalance which is contributing to weight gain and difficulty losing weight. The only way to combat this is to manage hormones, restrictive eating can actually do more harm than good.
What you can try instead
Don’t cut out complete food groups. Instead, focus more on the quality of food you’re eating. You want to begin to manage your blood sugar system so that you can improve your hormones. This means focusing on eating carbohydrates that are Low GI, not just removing them completely. The way in which you eat and the timing between meals is also more important than restricting your calorie intake.
MISTAKE #2: Think the only way to manage your weight long term is with medication.
Weight loss medications like Ozempic and Duromine do not actually address the cause of your weight gain and are not sustainable long term. Once you go off of these medications the weight will just come back. Plus they have some nasty side effects!
What you can try instead
Instead you want to address the root cause of your weight issues, which as mentioned above is your hormonal imbalances. Consider working with a Naturopath who can support you on your weight loss journey with an individualised supplement and herbal medicine regime that naturally helps improve your body's hormonal balance and metabolism so that you can have lasting results even once off the supplements.
MISTAKE #3: Not realising how big of an impact your mindset has on your weight loss success.
Without understanding your mindset, drive to change and accessing the appropriate support you’ll eventually hit a wall with all attempts to improve your health. This is then likely to make you feel guilty and create a never ending cycle of attempting to improve your health and self-sabotage.
What you can try instead
Instead you want to work with a practitioner who can help you determine your barriers to success and mindset blocks. And find a community that can help support you on your weight loss journey, a place where you can be held accountable and celebrate your successes. Doing something alone doesn’t take away from your achievements and success.
Next steps?
So, now you know the 3 biggest mistakes that women make when it comes to addressing their hormonal weight gain. Are there any of these that you’ve perhaps already made?
The most important thing to remember is that we are all human and weight loss journeys are sometimes difficult, which is why it’s so important to not do this alone. Find a community to support you and work with a practitioner like myself who gets your concerns.
And remember, you want to address your hormonal imbalance when it comes to sustainable weight loss. You don’t need low carb dieting and calorie restrictions to lose weight
